Gorillas are the most interesting tourist attractions sought in Uganda and Africa at large. Gorillas can be seen in the central Africa’s rainforests in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and on the slopes of the Virunga mountains. Mountain gorillas live in a high altitude of about 8000-13000 ft. compared to the lowland gorillas. Gorillas share approximately 98% of their DNA with humans hence making them the second nearest relatives to humans. Visitors who have ever been to Uganda say no other wildlife adventure compares to spending some time with Gorillas in their natural habitats.

Mountain gorillas live only in the rainforest jungles in east and central Africa mainly in Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. The government of these three sovereign countries protects these remaining mountain gorillas like the medieval king’s castle. Uganda has half of the remaining mountain gorillas in its Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

There are two tourist destinations in Uganda where you can find the mountain gorillas and they are Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga National Park. These parks have five trekking trailheads such as the Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo in Bwindi and Ntebeke in Mgahinga National Park. These five sectors all combined make 21 habituated mountain gorilla families and 168 gorilla trekking permits available daily.

Where to see gorillas in Uganda

Here below are some of the facts you need to know about gorillas in Uganda;

Uganda has more than one tourist destination where you can find and see the mountain gorillas. You can see them in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and in Mgahinga National Park. All these parks are located in the far south western part of Uganda. Visitors are advised to visit Bwindi Impenetrable Forest mostly due to its large number of mountain gorillas of about 500 individuals compared to Mgahinga which has one gorilla family.

Gorilla trekking is done when you have a gorilla trekking permit which can be bought from the Uganda Wildlife Authority head offices in Kampala or from the trusted travel company like CPN CONSULTANTS LTD at a fee of $700.

Gorilla habituation is also carried out in Uganda. Gorilla habituation is the process of taming the gorillas to get used to human presence. The process is done with the help of researchers collecting data and learning about the gorillas and their ways of living. Gorilla habituation process takes 4 hours while in the jungle. The process is allowed to people above 15 years after acquiring a gorilla habituation permit which can be bought from Uganda Wildlife Authority head offices in Kampala or you can use a trusted tour operator who buys it for you after making a deposit on our account. You send us your travel date, month and the year of travel. After confirming your deposit we book for you a gorilla habituation permit and then take a photocopy of the permit and send it to you. You are advised to book your gorilla habituation permit in advance at least 4 to 5 months prior to date of travel to avoid last minute problems.

How long does a gorilla family last       

Gorilla trekking experience lasts from 3 hours to a full day. Since you cannot tell the specific place to find the mountain gorillas there is no specific time for gorilla trekking. You have to be briefed then given a guide who would be knowing where the gorillas nested the previous day before continuing with your gorilla trekking activity. Upon meeting a gorilla family, you spend with it only one hour and then go back to the starting point and pick your certificate of completion of the safari and then take your leave back to the lodge.

Where to stay during a gorilla safari

Where to stay on a gorilla safari depends on the sector you want to trek .Bwindi forest has four sectors such as Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. All these sectors have accommodation facilities ranging from luxury, mid-range and budget.

Buhoma sector; Buhoma lodge, volcanoes safari Bwindi lodge, gorilla forest camp, mahogany springs lodge, silverback lodge among the rest.

Rushaga sector; gorilla safari lodge, chameleon hill lodge, Rushaga gorilla camp.

Nkuringo sector; clouds mountain gorilla lodge, chameleon hill lodge, Nshongi camp, Nkuringo gorilla camp among others.

Ruhija sector; gift of nature lodge, trekker’s tervan cottages, Ruhija gorilla mist lodge, Ruhija gorilla friends Resort and camp site among others.

Best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking can be done all year round in Uganda but the best time to go for gorilla trekking  is during the dry season of June to August and December to February. During this time the forest is dry and not slippery. Since no rain to inconvenience your trekking adventure photography is rewarding. Therefore mountain gorilla trekking experience is impressive and is a long lasting moment to encounter in Uganda.
